Marble

Marble is a metamorphic rock found in the mountainous regions of most countries of the world. Because of its beauty and elegance, marble is a popular choice for countertops, floors, foyers, fireplace facings, hearths, walls and windowsills.

Why choose marble?

The reason marble remains in heavy demand is its elegant good looks. It comes in a wonderful display of color: solid white, solid black, and a range of hues in the rose, yellow, gray and green spectrums. No two slabs are alike, so your countertop is truly one of a kind.

Marble is heat resistant. It stands up well to hot pans in the kitchen, styling tools in the bath, and has become popular for fireplace surrounds because it won't yellow from the heat.

Good to know

Honed finish: sanded to a soft, matte surface. It won't show scratches as much, but the open pores make it more susceptible to staining; sealing is highly recommended.

Polished finish: shiny and bright, it resists staining better than honed but shows scratches and etching more readily, and will wear down over time.

Common questions

Can I use marble in my kitchen?

We generally don't recommend marble for kitchens. It is soft and porous, so red wine, vinegar, marinara, blueberries and lemons will etch the finish. However careful you are, a marble kitchen top will develop water marks and a patina as it ages. A good sealer reduces, but does not eliminate, etching and staining. If you love the look, come talk to us about quartz alternatives with marble veining.

Where does marble work best?

Marble is a strong choice for bathrooms, entryways, floor tiles, fireplace surrounds, stair treads and other interior details. Its natural veining and color variation make it especially suited to spaces where the material is a focal point.

Is marble heat resistant?

Yes. Marble stands up well to heat from hot pans, bath styling tools and fireplaces. This is one reason it is a popular material for fireplace surrounds and hearths.

Will marble stain or etch?

Marble is porous and can stain. Acidic foods and drinks can also etch its finish. Prompt spill cleanup and a good sealer help reduce these effects, but they do not remove the risk completely.

Should I choose a honed or polished marble finish?

A honed finish has a soft matte surface and hides scratches better, but its open pores are more prone to staining. A polished finish is shiny and resists staining better, but scratches and etching show more easily over time.

Will my marble slab be unique?

Yes. Marble varies naturally in color and veining, so no two slabs are alike. Visit the StoneOne showroom to see the current slabs and find the variation that fits your project.
